Presentation transcript:

Main Idea: Supporting Details: - Hints: The Treaty took territory (land) away from Germany. Because Germany lost land, they also lost important resources, such as coal. Hitler told the German people that the only way to get the land back was to go to war. Supporting Details: - Main Idea:

Hints: The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to drastically reduce the size of its military. Germany could only use its military to keep order with its own people. They could not fight against other countries. The picture shows that Germany is surrounded by its enemies, such as France and Belgium. The picture also shows that the surrounding countries had much larger militaries than Germany was allowed to have after the treaty. The authors of the Treaty wanted to make sure that Germany was too weak to start another war.

Hints: The Treaty said that Germany had to pay reparations (money) to the Allies to pay for the damage done during WWI. The Allies demanded way more money than Germany could afford to pay (over $600 billion in today’s money/value). Germany was angry and humiliated by these demands for money. Germany only paid a small portion of the money that was demanded. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Germany stopped making payments.

Hints: This part of the Treaty is called the War Guilt Clause. The War Guilt Clause forced Germany to accept responsibility and take the blame for WWI. Germans saw this as very unfair and embarrassing.
