Why did the Revolutionary War begin? Some of the colonists did not want to be ruled by Britain. These colonists were called Patriots. Britain wanted to keep ruling the colonies. People who wanted to be ruled by Britain were called Loyalists.

Francis Marion Francis Marion lived in the Outer Coastal Plain Region of South Carolina.

Francis Marion Francis Marion was a Patriot. He fought for independence from Britain.

Francis Marion Francis Marion and his men would make surprise attacks on the British when they would come near the swamps. After the attack, Marion and his men would rush back into the swamps to hide.

Andrew Pickens Andrew Pickens was a Patriot. He fought for independence from Britain.

Andrew Pickens Andrew Pickens was a farmer when the Revolutionary War began. When a group of Loyalists burned his home, Pickens decided to fight. He led his men to victory in the Battle of Cowpens.

Thomas Sumter Thomas Sumter was a Patriot. He fought for independence from Britain.

Thomas Sumter Thomas Sumter’s home was burned by British soldiers so he decided to attack.

Thomas Sumter Thomas Sumter was gifted at surprise attacks after which he would disappear into the woods. His hit and run tactics and his tenacity earned him the nickname “The Gamecock”.

USC’s mascot, the city of Sumter, and Fort Sumter are named for Thomas Sumter.
