Human Knot/Cross the Line Cornell Notes-Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Welcome! Agenda for 8/16: Flipbook Human Knot/Cross the Line Cornell Notes-Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Alien or Not? Claim Game Homework: Flipbook due Monday First NB Check is next Friday

Flipbook (Page 9A)ok (Page 9A) Tab 1: Describe yourself and draw/describe one place you would like to visit. Tab 2: Most interesting fact you learned in science/most fun experiment you have done in science Tab 3: Top 10 favorites Tab 4: Describe and draw your favorite memory. Tab 5: Letter to your future self Don’t attach in your notebooks yet-you will be turning your flipbook in on Monday!

Don’t forget… Aeries is where you can see your grade for this class. If your parents don’t have an Aeries account, they will need: 1) Your student ID number 2) The phone number registered with the school 3) A verification code (found on your schedule you got on the first day of school)

Cornell Note-taking System Cornell notes are a way to take concise notes using a variety of tactics like a structured page layout, lists, and symbols. Each slide of notes should have a line skipped and the left side should have the main idea at least, along with any questions or diagrams you have. If you run out of room, continue on a free piece of notebook paper and attach it to your notes page later.

Cornell Note-taking System Cornell notes are short+to the point Left side is for main ideas+questions, right side is for notes Make lists+use abbrev. Skip a line for every slide of notes Run out of room? Continue on NB paper and attach later  MI: C. notes create a layout for easy and concise note-taking. Question: How are other ways the left side can be utilized?

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (Page 9B) Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) is a critical thinking framework for creating solid scientific explanations/arguments It allows you to combine your knowledge, your experiences and what you previously learned into something that is reflective and scientifically literate. CER has the following structure: Claim Evidence Reasoning

Here is an example of what your notes could look like CER  tool for making logical explanations Your knowledge+your experiences+previously learnings=reflective and scientifically literate CER has three parts: Claim Evidence Reasoning

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (Page 9B) A claim is a statement about your understanding about a phenomenon or results of an investigation It is…. A one-sentence answer to the question of the investigation something that needs to be proven, not something you already know Something that does not start with yes or no Something that describes the relationship with the independent and dependent variable Main idea: the claim is the answer you want to prove!!

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (Page 9B) Practice time! Put down your pencils. How did I get to work? Come up with a claim, no matter how far-fetched it is.

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (Page 9B) Evidence is scientific data used to support the claim It must be: Sufficient: you must have enough evidence to support the claim Appropriate: use data that supports your claim. Leave out information that doesn’t support the claim. Qualitative, Quantitative, or both.

Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (Page 9B) Reasoning: ties together the claim and evidence Shows how or why the data counts as evidence to support the claim Provides justification for why THIS evidence is important for THIS claim Includes one or two scientific principles that are important to the claim and evidence

Alien or Not? (Page 10A) For your title, write “Alien or Not?” On the first line, write “Evidence” and skip about 10-12 lines. After you have skipped those lines, write “What can I conclude about the little girl’s CER?”

Alien or Not? (Page 10A) I am going to play the video twice. Your job is bullet point the evidence the little girl presents on why she thinks her dad is an alien.

Alien or Not? (Page 10A) Move into your lab groups. Now that you have seen the video, your goal is make a CER based on the question “What can I conclude about the little girl’s CER?” Ask yourself, “Was her CER correct or not? How can I prove that?” Split in your lab groups and talk about the video. Use the evidence notes that you collected during the video and analyze (break down) at least 2 pieces of evidence she presented to use for YOUR evidence.

Alien or Not? (Page 10A) For your title, write “Alien or Not?” On the first line, write “Evidence” and skip about 10-12 lines. After you have skipped those lines, write “What can I conclude about the little girl’s CER?”
