“A Different View” Annual Competition Hampshire GA decided to base our annual competition on the GA’s manifesto “A Different View”. What follows are some examples of seeing the world differently. The aim is to ask students to find “A Different View” and write about its geography. “A Different View” Annual Competition

This is not trick photography. although it is at 90o This is not trick photography! although it is at 90o . The man is gripping on for all his might with his knees! I ljke this because it is contemplative about a different view.

about the world from “a different view”... anything you want it to be! We want you to think about the world from “a different view”... ...and this can be anything you want it to be! The next slides are offered to get students to think. Some don’t need explanation

There are many directions and technologies to view the world!

“wet ragged long winter underwear, hung out to dry” What map projection we use really changes our view of the world!

South Downs Summer Winter Satellite imagery – both are false colour satellite images.

The view from behind... We normally look at flowers front-on. What could we learn if we studied the back-view?

Would your concept of home change if it was here? What would one think of “home” if this was it? Could talk about: contrast the cable car approach with students’ usual driveway ! Home is getting away from it all Foundations How long might it remain?

The world viewed at the same level as soil bugs...

What does the world look like during a bungee jump?

What can we think about roads? An example, but remember – you can take any approach or style you wish! What can we think about roads?

Roads – an escape route! Between the passions of cities and pale towns lie unrequited distances empty stretches of unnamed landscape curving and lifting in a sleep of light where the soul travels far out into wide fields and wilderness James Griffin Idyllic! The road ends here. Away from it all. A little piece of wilderness in a crowded country. A chance for a “must-have” holiday, to restore one’s energies for a return to the fray of a western lifestyle.

Roads – a lifeline! I want to be by the roadside – I’ll wait days if I have to. Disaster has struck this region and the UN convoy is bringing relief supplies to us. The best chance of survival is to be along the roadside. People are lucky if their homes are here. My cousins live 23 miles from here – we don’t know if they have heard that help is arriving, but they may be too weak to come anyway.

Criteria for submission.... you can be as creative as you wish !! You need to: Supply an image(s) of your “different view” with a written account of the geography that can be understood from it. This may be: accompanying text/poetry annotation attached to the image Explain how your “different view” offers other insights compared to the conventional view Use geographical vocabulary

How to submit your entry Send us your entry as: an image(s) and text on 1 side A4 (maximum) an image(s) and text on 2 powerpoint slides (maximum) a poster

Why bother? Because you are a geographer with a great awareness of the importance of place and empathy with other points of view Because by participating you are part of a community of geographers sharing something that is important to all of us Because there could be money in it!

Prizes 4 x £50 to the winners Deadline 15 February 2013 All entries to be sent to: Iain Palot lesgrionettes@yahoo.co.uk Awards at the Spring Conference, Tuesday 5th March 2013
