Human Factors of Schlieren Flow Visualization Analysis Student: Nicholas Arnold-Medabalimi RISE Element: Research Mentor: Dr. Christopher Cadou Background: Previous Work: An important part of flow visualization is the identification of flow features and their characteristics. This adds a human factor as one must individually examine and characterize each frame Graduate students working under Dr. Cadou have developed machine vision which can quickly analyze large quantities of pictures Objective: It is important to understand how the traditional measurement of Schlieren image features compares with the newer automated techniques To achieve this a tool is being created which can be used to test humans capability to reliably calculate flow feature characteristics The data from the use of this tool will be compared with that of already created automated identification techniques Status The tool has been developed to the point that it will show users various Schlieren images and allow them to attempt to identify and measure features. Next Steps Looking into the proper process and considerations that need to taken due to the nature of human surveying Possible distribution systems(Closed Survey vs. Crowd sourced)
