Ana Cristina Cardoso & Mark Dowell Case Studies for the Eutrophication Activity Guidance Chapter 8 Ana Cristina Cardoso & Mark Dowell

Case Studies - Objectives To provide empirical confirmation of the conceptual framework and the subsequent implementation of this in the context of assessment To performance this exercise across water categories and ecoregions

Selection Criteria Specific Criteria: There should be local representative eager to be involved in the process and do the work (dataset, analysis, reporting) Existing routine monitoring program Substantial (min. 5 years) monitoring dataset Seasonally comprehensive dataset (min. 4 measurements per year) Existing activities for Eutrophication assessment Existing "local" opinion on Eutrophication

Selection Criteria (contd.) Global Criteria: Should be adequately distributed across water categories Should be geographically comprehensive Should be representative of different ecoregions & WFD typology

Case Studies - Marine/Trans. 9 - Marine + transitional water bodies

Case Studies - Lake/Rivers 16 - lakes + rivers

Case Study Workshop 19-20 January 2006 Synthesis Fill in Tables, summary of template content Trace eutrophication process studies through conceptual framework & holistic checklist Confirm process with present classification approach Documents Discuss and agree on format and content of Guidance document Chapter Discuss mongraph: common format, EUR report, DG ENV publication, book 3 tables: Primary and secondary effects Classification methodology Loads

Tagus River estuary The current Conceptual Framework of Eutrophication Is based in the OSPAR CF through a process to make it more generic and taking into consideration the WFD requirements and terminologies It includes results from discussions held at: a joint workshop on Marine Assessment and Monitoring with emphasis on eutrophication. JRC, Black Sea Commission and Helsinki Commission (Istanbul, Turkey, 21-22 April 2004) and in the Eutrophication Workshop on a Common Assessment Methodology. JRC (Ispra, 14-15 September 2004). THIS DIAGRAM REPRESENTS THE EUTROPHICATION PROCESS AND ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS THAT MAY ARISE FROM NUTRIENT ENTRICHMENT From the conceptual framework we plan to arrive to a common assessment of eutrophication taking into consideration the specific WFD requirements: The conceptual framework provides us with means of identifying the critical processes specific to different water categories. To provide a link with type specific assessments (i.e. determination of reference conditions and classification) holistic checklists need to be derived for different water categories highlighting the critical processes and the biological/ physico-chemical parameters under the headings of causative factors, primary or direct effects and secondary or indirect effects. The level of detail to be included in the checklists reflect the specificity of the eutropication process in the different water categories.

“Umbrella” Critical Pathways The Marine WG identified, from the analysis of critical pathway flowcharts for all of the Case Studies, two overarching groupings representing the Eutrophication process: The first is the “traditional” nutrient - productivity - oxygen deficiency pathway The second represents the imbalance in nutrient stoichiometry resulting in change in the phytoplankton population giving rise to anomalous/toxic blooms etc This second grouping justifies the need for biological element measurements in classifying waters for Eutrophication at European scale

Timeline (tentative) 10 March - Request to case study contact persons for submission case study in ‘Eutrophication Guidance format’ plus tables compiled in the workshop and complete more extensive case study reports (not applicable to all but only for those that had submitted only incomplete case study) End April - return all requested information to JRC 15 May - Draft Chapter 8 sent to case study contact person for comments/amendments/ further clarification End May return comments to JRC End July final draft version of Chapter 8

Thank You!
