Shape and Form

Definition: Physical Shape of an object Shape: 2 dimensional Form: 3 dimensional 3 Types of form Realistic Abstract Geometric

Realistic Form Lifelike and traditional

Abstract Form Has realistic traits but altered.

Geometric Form Uses basic shapes to create the form

Rectilinear Shapes and Forms Square and rectangle (2D) and cube (3D) This form is the most commonly used in our homes. Most of our room shapes follow this form, and many pieces of furniture and accessories are also rectilinear. There is danger of this form feeling harsh or monotonous. Some examples of square and rectangular shapes used in a house are mirrors, pillows, trays, rugs, windows, and doors.

Angular shapes and forms Triangles (2D) and pyramids (3D) Angular forms add a great deal of life to a room. They are more flexible than rectangles because the angles can be manipulated in many ways. They are the stronger more dominant shape. Diagonals usually make things look larger. They also suggest motion and are less common, so they hold attention. Some examples of triangular shapes used in homes: lamp shades, Christmas trees, and sloping roofs as angled walls.

Curved Shapes and Forms Circles (2D) and spheres (3D) Curved forms have unique qualities: They remind us of motion – probably because they remind us of balls and the lines are never ending. They bring to mind things found in nature: flowers, trees, bodies, or clouds. Some examples in a home: Clocks, wreaths, picture frames, tables, chairs, and vases.

Using form in the home Form follows function You wouldn’t want a chair that looks interesting but can’t be sat on. Related forms are more agreeable than unrelated forms The style of the furniture determined by its form. A gradual change in form smoothly directs the eye

The form should be related to its surroundings The form should be related to its surroundings. For the following pictures, decide the furniture form that would fit best in each of the following rooms:

SHAPE AND FORM ACTIVITY Supplies Needed: Play dough Shape and Form Worksheet Directions: You will draw a 2D shape on the paper and then turn it into a 3D form out of play dough. The teacher will need to initial each box after you have created a form before you put the play dough away.
