Independent Reading SAT #4

Synthesis chart Review Two Kinds and Frida Kahlo on the chart

Cultural identity writing Sample writing/As we read, look for and mark things the writer does that: Reveal his/her cultural identity Help you connect to his/her experience (?) Establish his voice (I’m thinking here of the writer moves – repetition, use of a popular song, end where you begin

Cultural identity writing More options to begin draft: List any MAJOR EVENTS in your life related to this culture/subculture (ex. Buying your first pair of basketball shoes, holiday traditions with a family, a really great experience with a movie, your first ‘big game’, a significant loss, a significant victory, etc.) List AS MANY AS YOU CAN Think of specific memories tied to one of those events. It does not have to be about your culture. (EX: Maybe you were watching a horror movie/anime the day you found out your parents were getting divorced.)

“Legal Alien” & TPCASTT

“Legal Alien” Collaborative Reader Response Everyone needs TWO sticky notes. Individual Response – Sticky Note Identify the juxtaposition used by the narrator and what it emphasizes/reveals. Collaborative Response (groups of 4) – Best Answer How does the author represent cultural identity in the poem?
