4th Grade Curriculum standards

Literacy – Major Concepts Four Main Categories: Literature Skills focused on character driven fiction stories Informational Text Skills focused on the understanding of non-fiction texts Writing Skills focused on the writing of personal narratives, opinion pieces, and research writing Language Skills focused on grammar and conventions

Balanced Literacy Reading Mini-lesson to teach skills Independent/Guided Reading Skill based practice Novel Studies/Book Clubs Interactive Read-Aloud Model reading strategies and responses Word Work Word Study - Prefixes/Suffixes Making Meaning – Vocabulary Using Context Clues strategies Writing—Empowering Writers Planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing

Math- Major Concepts Operations and Algebraic Thinking - 4.OA Number and Operations Fractions - 4.NF Parts of a fraction Comparing fractions / Finding equivalent fractions Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions Measurement and Data – 4.MD Area and perimeter Metric measurements Measuring angles Geometry – 4.G Characteristics of 2-D shapes Operations and Algebraic Thinking - 4.OA Multi-step word problems Understanding factors and multiples Number and Operations in Base Ten - 4.NBT Understanding place value Understanding properties of the operations

NC.4.OA.4 Finding factors of a number is now limited to 50 instead of 100. NC.4.NBT.4 and NC.4.NBT.7 the range of numbers for place value and the operations of addition and subtraction are limited to 100,000. NC.4.MD.1 Customary measurement was removed from 4th grade. Metric measurement is now the focus in 4th grade to align and support place value understanding with decimals. NC.4.MD.3 Finding areas of rectilinear figures with known side lengths, was moved from 3rd grade to 4th grade. NC.4.MD.4 Fractional values on a line plot has been removed from this standard, and the focus is working with categorical and numerical data
