Putting PEN to Paper: Publications and dissemination Bogor, Indonesia, 24th March 2009

Two questions… How many of you have already published results of your work related to PEN? How many of you WISH to publish your research at some point in the future?

Possible means of publication for PEN Overall synthesis paper in high quality journal (e.g. Nature, Science) Other journal articles (regional analyses, country specific) Methods book CIFOR Category 3 regional books CIFOR Working/Occasional Papers? Web-based dissemination

Synthesis paper in “prestigious” journal Main scientific output (high impact factor) Content and approach to be discussed later this week The research highlights the importance of farm-related, forest-related and other income sources in the lives of these rural communities. This paper explores the relative importance and role of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in comparison to other livelihood activities such as farming, trade, timber extraction, and so on to rural forest-dwellers in Cameroon and Nigeria. The findings indicate that NTFPs as a source of income are not as important as argued by some, and that farm-related, timber-related, and trade-related income sources are more heavily depended on and likely to be more promising than NTFPs for poverty alleviation. The study demonstrates that the importance of NTFPs depends on access to markets and forest resources, difference in economies (e.g. where population is growing faster than per capita incomes vs. where per capita incomes are rising), and individuals’ socio-economic category.

Regional books Chapters modified from narratives Proposal discussed in Barcelona Chapters modified from narratives Requires application to CIFOR Publications Committee (2010) Editors? Regional PENNER + Resource Person(s)?

CIFOR Working/Occasional Papers?? Discussed in Barcelona as publication option But for scientific rigour, need peer-review and copy editing (Category 3) Relatively low citation factor (Angelson & Aryal, 2004)

Better alternative: peer-reviewed journals Builds on writing workshop Possible “Special Issue” in appropriate journal Right journal for the right paper (nearly 75% of CIFOR publications not cited (Angelson & Aryal, 2004) Same process as Working Papers but with greater “impact” However, needs a commitment from PEN Resource Persons for mentoring and support

Web-based dissemination Update and expansion of Domain 3 website (Vita) Update of PEN sub-site PEN “Facebook” page for each PENNER (project description, links to other publications, dissertations)

Let’s discuss… Which medium do you think is the best means of dissemination for you and your work? How much support do you need from PEN? Other ideas and suggestions are very welcome
