WORDS 30 60 90 MINUTE 1 2 3 4 March 11, 2010 Math 201 OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to identify units of capacity and equivalent units of capacity. AIM: How can we use a table of equivalent units to help us convert to units of equivalent capacity? STANDARDS: 6.M.2, 6.M.3, 6.M.4, 6.M.5 PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: How many words can Maria type in 4 minutes if she types 30 words per minute? WORDS 30 60 90 MINUTE 1 2 3 4

MINI LESSON Capacity is the amount of liquid that a container, like a bottle, can hold. Capacity can be measured in customary units: cup the size of an ordinary cup, like a cup of coffee pint the size of a small carton of milk or juice quart the size of a larger carton of milk gallon the size of a jug of milk or juice

1 pint = 2 cups 1 quart 2 pints 1 gallon 4 quarts EQUIVALENT UNITS OF CAPACITY 1 pint = 2 cups 1 quart 2 pints 1 gallon 4 quarts Delia bought 16 pints of milk. How many gallon containers could she have bought to have the same amount of milk?

Step 1 Convert pints to quarts Since 2 pints = 1 quart, then 16 pints = 8 quarts Step 2 Convert quarts to gallons Since 4 quarts = 1 gallon, then 8 quarts = 2 gallons Delia could have bought 2 gallons of milk instead of 16 pints

Another way: Since we are going from a smaller measure to a larger measure, we divide. Remember:

Small Large Divide Pints Quarts Gallons

March 12, 2010 Part 2 Math 201 Capacity can be measured in METRIC UNITS, also. milliliter (mL) the size of a drop of water liter (L) the size that is a little more than quart

4 X 1,000 (mil to 1 L) = 4,000 milliliters of soda 1 liter = Question: Tamara has 4 liters of soda. How many milliliters is that? What we know liters Need to find out milliliters larger smaller operation: multiplication 4 X 1,000 (mil to 1 L) = 4,000 milliliters of soda

Question: Jose needs 3,000 mL of solution for a science experiment. How many liters must he get for his experiment? What we know Need to find out operation: =
