Islamic Accomplishments Created by Violet DeLuna Chapter 4 / World History

The Golden Age Muslim culture enjoyed a golden age. A gold age is a period during which a culture is at its peak. Many cultural advances were made at this time.

Design Muslim art did not represent real subjects like humans or animals. These images were viewed as distractions to their religious practice. Instead, Muslim artists used arabesque, geometric designs, and calligraphy.

Design Arabesque: winding stems of leaves and flowers Geometric designs: patterns with shapes Calligraphy: handwriting

Mathematics The Abbasids were interested in building on the ancient Greeks developments in math. They developed a set of mathematical calculations that we call algebra today.

Bookmaking The Chinese taught the Abbasids how to make paper. As books became more available, people became more interested in learning.

Bookmaking Muslims scholars translated Greek texts into Arabic. Muslims also developed literature of their own. Cordoba, Spain became a center for learning. Here is the staircase of the Cordoba library:

Medicine It was in the Muslim world that hospitals were first created. These hospitals attracted medical scholars. They had lecture halls, libraries, pharmacies, laboratories and patient rooms with beds.

Think About… Which accomplishments were the most useful for improving the quality of life? Which were the most useful for the people in future generations?
