What is it? One place 11-19 year olds All the choices Decision tools Explain that Careerpilot is a one stop careers website for 11 – 19 year olds. Helping students to find out about all of their career options. The site also has career choices where they can record the thing THEY are interested in (they need to sign in or register to do this).

What will you get out of Work Experience? TODAY: Find out what skills you have, what jobs you might like, what choices you might make later. Find out what working life is like You will learn more skills Helps you explore a type of career you might like Make useful contacts for the future Potentially earn some money (e.g. part time work) It can build your self-confidence Talk through why WEX is important to remind them. Today will be a chance to think of the skills they have, jobs they might like to do and start thinking about future choices.

Which parts of the site today? 1. Register 3.Job profiles 4. Choices 5. Qualification planner 2. Skills Map These are some of the highlights of Careerpilot that might be useful to Y10 students including a section about work experience in a job or career.

Information on work experience Explain that the website can be used to save their choices – they can bookmark pages and choices to come back to later. They can record their skills and jobs that they are interested in and save them in Career Tools and after work experience record what they did. Soon they will do Skills Map and select some Job sectors.

If an employer asks, “What skills do you have?”, what would you say? Get your answers ready with the Skills Bank. Skills Map: They do quiz, see results, add their own examples and when they apply for work experience or a job/course they can use their examples from the Skills Bank

Do you know what job you might like to do? To get ideas for work experience or for the future: They can explore job sectors – students can look at jobs in different sectors or look at jobs that are linked to school subjects or take the job sector quiz if they are unsure what they want to do.

Shows the animal job sector and the 3 different sub sector within this sector – animal, agriculture and environmental jobs

This shows the animal sector and the different jobs within that sector where students can find out more detail about individual jobs

They can find out lots of information about the job and, if they have done the skills map, compare their skills with those required by the job.

Career Tools linked to Reporting Zone A reminder that each of their choices and results are saved within their Career Tools (as long as they register on the site and have book, marked)

Registered before? Then SIGN IN. Remember PASSWORD! The first thing the students should do is register or sign if they have used before, then they can save all your choices as they use the site and see them in a report. Note to person delivering this session: It is really important that students get back to their previous record if they have already registered before. If they can’t remember what email they used you can check it in the Reporting Zone by searching for them in Users. Is they can remember the email they used then they can do ‘Forgotten Password’. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE REMINDER TO REMEMBER THEIR PASSWORD AS THEY WILL BE COMING BACK TO CAREERPILOT

5 suggested activities to get you started 1 2 Keep bookmarking your choices 5 suggested activities to get you started 3 There are 4 activities to help with planning for WEX 5 4

Students can work through the suggested Y10 activities Students can work through the suggested Y10 activities. If there is time they could do a 5 minute general explore of the site first but try and get the set tasks done as this will provide information in the reports which can be accessed in the Reporting Zone. Timings at the end – you will need to allow 5 minutes for a plenary and then 3 minutes for the survey (this is optional)

Did anybody find a job that earns more than £100,000 a year? Who explored? Did anybody find a job that earns more than £100,000 a year? Hands up who is keen on? as on slide. Pilots can earn up to 140,000 a year when experienced. Could also ask how much does a teacher earn? £22,917 – £67,305!

Did anyone score 100% on one of the skills? When you come back from WEX add a record to your Skills Bank Did anyone score 100% on one of the skills? Ask the students if anyone scored100%, go through each skill and have a show of hands? Have a discussion about what they found out when they looked at the skills required for different jobs and their own skills if there is time. Remind them when they come back they should log on and add an entry to the Skill Map about Work experience.

Report moves up each year Just in case they haven’t seen the report show it and explain that is created once the career tools have been completed – moves up with them each year in school – must remember password to see it again and every year! Report moves up each year
