Aug and dim Intervals

Augmented Intervals An augmented interval is a Major or Perfect interval that is increased by a semitone. Always identify the Major or Perfect interval first then raise the top note by a CHROMATIC semitone.

Augmented Intervals in Eb+

Complete these examples: Aug 4th Aug 7th

Diminished Intervals A diminished interval is a minor or Perfect interval that is decreased by a semitone. Always identify the Major or Perfect Interval first. Change the Major intervals into minor intervals. Then, lower the top note of the minor or Perfect interval by a Chromatic Semitone.

Examples

Complete these examples: dim 5th dim 2nd

Intervals Sizes AUG PERFECT DIM AUG MAJOR v MINOR DIM

Interval Inversions 1. The numerical values of the interval and its inversion add up to 9. 2. Move the lower note up one octave or the higher note down one octave.

Interval Trick 3. The quality changes as follows: MAJOR becomes MINOR MINOR becomes MAJOR PERFECT STAYS PERFECT AUGMENTED becomes DIMINISHED DIMINISHED becomes AUGMENTED

Examples

Another Method… You can also identify intervals by counting semitones.

Intervals written BELOW a given note: When writing an Augmented interval below a given note, first find the Major or Perfect interval. Then write the augmented interval by lowering the lower note a chromatic semitone. NEVER ALTER THE GIVEN NOTE!

Write an Aug 4th below the given note:

Write an Aug 3rd below the given note:

Intervals written BELOW a given note: When writing a diminished 2nd, 3rd, 6th, or 7th below a given note, first find the Major interval. Then find the minor interval by raising the bottom note by a chromatic semitone. Then write the diminished interval by raising the lower note of the minor interval by a chromatic semitone.

Example: MAJOR 3rd Minor 3rd dim 3rd

REMEMBER! Remember that a natural, flat, or double flat sign placed in front of a lower note increases the distance between the two notes.

Intervals written BELOW a given note: When writing a diminished unison, 4th, 5th, or 8ve below a given note, first find the Perfect interval. Then write the diminished interval by raising the lower note a chromatic semitone.

Example Perfect 5th diminished 5th

REMEMBER! Remember that a natural, sharp, or double sharp sign placed in front of a lower note decreases the distance between two notes!
