Georgia General Assembly The General Assembly is the name of the legislative branch of Georgia’s government. They make the laws 2 houses of the General Assembly- Senate (56 members) and House of Representatives (180 members)

Election of members Members of both houses are elected for 2 year terms, with no limit on number of terms Senate Requirements: 25 years old, U.S. citizens, Georgia residents for 2+ years, residents of their district for 1+ year House of Reps Requirements: 21 years old, all the rest are the same

Committees Committees review bills and research them before they can be voted on to become laws After studying them, the committee presents what they have learned to the rest of the General Assembly The Lieutenant Governor assigns people to committees in the Senate; the Speaker of the House does so in the House of Reps

How a bill becomes a law (in 9 steps) 1. Proposal submitted to clerk’s office 2. Copies of bills given to Assembly members 3. Bills are assigned to a committee 4. The committee researches the bill 5. The bill is voted out of committee and sent to the House or Senate

How a bill becomes a law; continuted 6. Assembly members debate the bill, may make changes and vote on passage 7. Passed bill is sent to other chamber (House or Senate) for consideration 8. Steps 3-7 are repeated in the other house 9. Bill is sent to Governor, who must sign it in order for it to become a law

Vetoes If the Governor does not like the bill, he may veto it A veto is a “no vote” which prevents the bill from becoming law The General Assembly may override the veto with a 2/3 vote in each house. Then it becomes a law regardless of Governor’s veto. If he ignores the bill, it becomes a law.

DUE AT THE END OF CLASS Assignment Research who is the House of Representative Member and the Senate Member for the district you live in. Determine: Their Age? Political Party? What Committee they serve on? How long they have served? DUE AT THE END OF CLASS
