From Data to Actionable Insights- When it matters! Dr. Manish Kohli, MD, MPH, MBA, FHIMSS Chairman, HIMSS Global Board of Directors @ Speaker twitter handle

Intuition to Precision: A Paradigm Shift Intuitive Medicine Symptoms, intuition and limited information Evidence Based Medicine Patterns, partial data set and knowledge Precision Medicine Algorithms, Massive data network, real time, aggregated information and insights “Right now, all we typically offer is one-size-fits all treatments,” said Delaney.  “If you have this illness, you get this treatment.  Sometimes we have data from randomized controlled trials that help us be a little more precise, but it’s still like buying a t-shirt.  You've got your small, medium, large, and extra-large, which is better than one-size-fits-all, but not by much.” That approach is going out of fashion very quickly, however, as healthcare’s big data analytics competencies improve.  More and more organizations are recognizing the importance of collecting and synthesizing information outside of the purely clinical realm.

Patient Experience Safety and Quality Access Caregiver Wellbeing Cost

The problem has worsened – 2016 @ Speaker twitter handle

Healthcare delivery has become far more complex… Data overload Too many data points 24M articles; 2100 new articles/day Structured vs Unstructured Not organized, contextualized Signal to noise ratio 2.5M alerts in 1 month for 5 ICUS with average daily census of 66 patients Less time with patients How does a doctor or nurse process the huge amount of data to ensure care that safe, effective, efficient, timely, patient centered and equitable? Health and Care are lost in the complexity

Impact of Burnout: Opportunity Cost and Cost Absenteeism US: 1 million missed workdays daily due to stress Presenteeism and Engagement Productivity and performance Medical and Mental Health Costs US: $150 – $300 billion annually

Best Experience with information and technology Reduce burnout Improve productivity Improve turnover, retention and recruitment To positively impact Quality, Safety, Access, Cost and Patient Experience

What does “great” experience look like? Data acquisition is simplified, integrated and automated Data retrieval is context specific, on-demand and delivered in the form of actionable insights at the point of decision making Technology becomes the invisible factor Design thinking Innovation through empowerment Alignment People, processes and technology are continually aligned to maximize clinician-patient contact time and outcomes Streamlined governance and decision making Targeted, timely, trusted communication

Fabric of Safe, High Quality and High Value Care Vision People Leadership Processes Strategy and Governance Innovation Insights Culture Education, Skills and Training Simplified, Standardized and outcomes driven Information and Technology

Streamline governance and Support, always Patient Experience Safety and Quality Access Caregiver Wellbeing Cost Simplify technology, Standardize content, Streamline governance and Support, always Focus on People and Data- Actionable Insights when it matters most (for best outcomes)!

Thank you! Dr. Manish Kohli, MD, MPH, MBA, FHIMSS Chairman, HIMSS Global Board of Directors
