KA-SAT: the biggest European HTS About KA-SAT Satellite main figures Power Spacecraft Power <14kW Payload DC power 11kW Solar Array Power up to 16kW Mass Payload mass ~1000 kg Spacecraft dry mass ~3170 kg Satellite launch mass 5.7t -6.1t Orbital Manoeuvre life time 16 years In-orbit longitude 9°E Launch ILS Proton Launch date: December 26th, 2010

KA-SAT: the biggest European HTS Two types of satellites for two different applications Traditional wide footprint New-generation HTS (KA-SAT) TV Voice/Data Optimised for broadcast services Optimised for IP applications Multi-beam architecture High frequency reuse Significant increase in bandwidth New markets New services One signal received simultaneously by unlimited number of users in a wide area covering a continent or more Traditional wide-beam satellite and HTS multi-spotbeams are complementary: two models for two types of applications 3

KA-SAT: the biggest European HTS Multi-spot Ka-band coverage 82 Beams 4 Colours = 4 Freq/Pol Slots repeated all over coverage Frequencies are reused 20 times Each circle on the picture represent an individual « beam » and the four different colours represents four different combinations of frequency/polarisation. There are 82 total Beams, so the same Frequency/Polarisation is reused 20 times, allowing the high throughput of the satellite. Each single Beam (whose diameter is in the range of 300 kms) provides around 475 Mbps from the satellite to the ground (FWD capacity or throughput), throughput which is shared among all the Terminals within the Beam. It also provides around 475 Mbit from ground to the Satellite (RTN capacity or throughput) again shared among all of the Terminals within a Beam. So rounding the numbers 80 beams each one providing 475 Mbit on the FWD and 475 on the RTN, makes a total of around 70 Gbit, 35 on the RTN and 35 on the FWD

Ka-Sat typical applications

professional use CASES Public Safety On-The-Spot Communication Smart Grid & Utility operators Backhaul - Monitoring for cell sites and traffic offload Temporary communication for disaster recovery Video Surveillance Transmission Backup of terrestrial Infrastructure

Civil Protection in Turkey Solution for mobile groups in case of disaster Connectivity in case of earth quake and other disaster Connectivity of refugee camps Back-up for terrestrial infrastructure

Connection for seismic sensors in Turkey Sensors installed at tectonic breaklines Ka-SAT provides connectivity, where no reliable infrastructure is available.

Video surveillance HIRES/Mobotix Mobotix is a leading supplier of professional video surveillance systems. HIRES is a system integrator of the Mobotix-technology. Ka-SAT is used in case remote locations, where no personal is present, shall be protected.

Broadband communication for Fire brigade trucks Used by fire brigades in France Nomadic use to enable broadband data communication when working remote. Back-up for terrestrial Infrastructure of the fire brigades. Connectivity to locations with difficult access in the Alpes.

Broadband communication for Fire brigade trucks Used by fire brigades in Croatia Broadband data communication when working remote. Back-up for terrestrial Infrastructure of the fire brigades. Connectivity to locations with difficult access in remote places.
