Background Increased recognition on the importance of statistics for policy making and monitoring. Marrakech Action Plan for Statistics (2004) Good statistics are seen as an integral part of good governance. Address the needs of developing countries to strengthen statistical capacity to produce, analyze and disseminate data. capcity

Background 2010 World Population and Housing Census Programme (launched in 2005) Recognize PH census as one of the main sources of data for effective development planning and objective decision-making. More opportunities for Africa to utilize census data. All but 2 states had/will conduct a census during the 2010 round.

Period: 3 years (January 2010 to December 2012) Project “Strengthening National Capacity to Analyze, Present and Disseminated Data for Evidence-based Policy Making” Period: 3 years (January 2010 to December 2012) Resources: Contribution from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Executing agency: UNSD Targets: Countries in the African continent where the processing of census data has been completed.

Objectives of the project To facilitate fuller utilization of census data and enhance in-house capacity of NSOs to analyze them. To facilitate better collaboration between NSOs (producers) and local research institutes/other government offices (users).

Activities Planned under the Project National training programmes for NSO staff Preparation of analytical publications Regional/Sub-regional seminars (2012) Study visits Advisory services 6
