Movements Of People-Migration

Do Now: what are some background information you already know on the migration of people. Aim: How did the movement of people have a significant impact on the United States? Learning Objective: Students Will Be Able To identify the key impact on the movement of people throughout the nations history. Homework: worksheet

Colonial Settlement(1600s-1700s) New England Colonies The colonies of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire were called New England Colonies because they were first settled by England. In addition, these four colonies all began as places where the colonists were free to practice their religion, which they could not do in England because the king of England saw them as a threat to his power. Middle Colonies New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware were known as the Middle Colonies because they were located between the New England Colonies and the Southern Colonies. The first colonists in the Middle Colonies were the Dutch, but the English used their powerful navy to force the Dutch to surrender their land to the English. The king then gave the captured land to English nobles to settle.

Colonial Settlement(1600s-1700s) Southern Colonies The Southern Colonies included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These colonies are grouped together because they were all originally settled by the English, had rich soil for growing cash crops, and relied on slave labor. There were some differences among the Southern Colonies, however.

Westward Expansion (1800s) Westward Expansion is the expansion to the West. Westward Expansion was mostly used to Expand westward from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The United States started with 13 original colonies and expanded until we had 50 states and went from sea to sea. Parts of the Westward Expansion includes: --- The Louisiana Purchase (1803) --- Includes all 15 current U.S. states/Most of the Midwest --- Florida Purchase (1821) --- From Spain --- Texas Annexed (1845) --- Includes all of Texas, and parts of New Mexico and Colorado. --- Mexican Cession (1848) --- Includes California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and parts of New Mexico, Colorado. --- Oregon Country (1846) --- Include Washington, Oregon, Idaho from the British.

Suburbanization(1950s-1960s) Suburbanization across the United States was influenced by both social and technological developments. In most areas, suburban development was directly related to the evolution of transportation routes. Therefore, these suburbs can be characterized as railroad suburbs, streetcar/trolley suburbs, early automobile suburbs, and freeway suburbs. The location and design of suburbs throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century were influenced by the ethnic heritage and the income of the prospective residents.

Exit Ticket Write a summary about what we did today focusing on one point. ***3-5 sentences***
