One Million Mentors Mentee Induction

Agenda Welcome and Overview What is mentoring? 1MM offer to mentees The role of a mentee What happens if…… What next?

Definition of Mentoring? "A mentor is a more experienced individual willing to share knowledge with someone less experienced in a relationship of mutual trust" - David Clutterbuck.

1MM Offer You will be matched to a mentor, who will be over the age of 25 and a professional or retired professional One to one meetings for one hour, once a month for up to a year Safeguarding policy : DBS checks and mentoring will take place on site at all times Communications between mentor and mentee will be via the College coordinator only Confidentiality policy

Benefits of Mentoring Increased networks Self Confidence Increased work opportunities Public speaking skills Interview Skills Engage in Social Action Meet and learn from someone new CV support 7) 8) 10) Bain &Co, Thoughtworks, #iwill fund, Spirit and NESTA

Role of Mentee Mentees should demonstrate their commitment to the relationship by: ● being proactive in the relationship, setting the agenda for meetings, actively following up on any agreed actions afterwards ● keeping any commitments made e.g. attending meetings or responding to emails ● preparing for the mentoring meetings beforehand in order to make the most of the time available ● seeking the mentor’s advice ● listening carefully ● responding to (and acting on) feedback ● respecting confidentiality ● remaining open to new ideas and being receptive to the mentor’s opinions.

What happens if…… My mentor does not have the exact experience I’m looking for? My mentor does not show up? I have to miss a session? My mentor and I do not ‘click’? My mentor secures me a work shadowing opportunity? My mentor acts or says something inappropriate?

What Next? Be prepared for first meeting:   Write a short bio about yourself and your aspirations Read your mentor bio. Identify:1) what do I want? 2) what’s stopping me? 3) what am I going to do to succeed? Do some research on what skills/ experience or opportunities you need to achieve your ambition Enjoy it and relax!
