Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos Earth Observations in Service of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Scaling Successful Practices Panel I, Sharing of Good Practice Country Examples Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos (Research Director, NOA) Director of the Greek GEO Office

can vary depending on the country Best Practices can vary depending on the country EO maturity and the capacities of NSOs What is considered for granted in one case, is probably the most urgent need in another place of the world. And it can be as simple as … … adequate connection to internet to access EO data or storage capacity

Where do we currently stand? Existing workflows Already using EO NSO needs prioritization Resources identification Teaming and coordination Catalog Search & Download http://sentinels.space.noa.gr

Mandate The Greek GEO Office (GGO) operation focuses on the effective participation of Greece in the national, regional, and global activities, under the framework of GEO and GEOSS … as the focal point of GEO activities in Greece, it addresses the need for a permanent coordination mechanism of GEOSS activities at the national level, at the same time building interfaces with GEO and the Greek State

First steps undertaken GGO collaborates with EO4SDG to receive relevant material and stimulate actions at the national level GGO is in direct contact with the NSO and has presented the benefits of using EO for SDG reporting at the NSO premises, to relevant department Heads GGO has presented its “national strategy” for exploiting EO for SDGs, in the Smart Statistics for Smart Cities conference ), co-organised by Eurostat, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the National Documentation Centre (EKT), at the highest level. Earth Observations

First steps undertaken 2 ministries, 2 regional authorities and iBEC (GEO PO) organized a high level conference entitled “1st Round table focusing on the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in the Balkan Peninsula” to identify and set up a regional (Balkan) network that will have a key role in the engagement and collaboration with user stakeholders. GGO in a coordinating role, through the participation of Greek partners in relevant projects, already builds the EO community to support the relevant activities to support the NSO in SDG reporting.

Urban indicators that depend on EO data 11.1.1 Proportion of urban population living in slums, informal settlements or inadequate housing 11.2.1 Proportion of population that has convenient access to public transport, by sex, age and persons with disabilities 11.3.1 Ratio of land consumption rate to population growth rate 11.6.2 Annual mean levels of fine particulate matter (e.g. PM2.5 and PM10) in cities 11.7.1 Average share of the built-up area of cities that is open space for public use for all, by sex, age and persons with disabilities Urban Essential Variables

Practices ! Best practices !! Best fit practices !!!
