Quiz 3 Review Grammar Formal writing strategies Compound and complex sentences Punctuation and comma usage Restrictive vs. nonrestrictive elements Mass vs count nouns Formal writing strategies Make your writing clear, structured, and detailed Avoid 1st and 2nd person Use titles where appropriate Use complex and discipline specific language Avoid figurative language and idioms Edit thoroughly Use passive voice for maximum objectivity (particularly in research writing) Avoid absolutes/use qualifiers Avoid contractions (in very formal writing) (check 6-20 and 6-22 on the class website for more information)

Group activity – WTE sample evaluation In your unit 2 groups Read through one of the sample WTE essays on the class website and answer the questions below What is the thesis or overall evaluation in the essay? Is it located in a suitable part of the essay for closed form prose? What criteria does the writer use to evaluate the podcast? Does the podcast meet or fail each of these criteria? Does the essay seem to follow a semi-formal writing style? How does it do this? What grade would you give the essay for each of the scoring criteria on the assignment sheet? Give a letter grade for each and a brief explanation.

Class discussion- the podcast genre What is a podcast? How is a podcast different from a radio broadcast or an informative video? Where does the word podcast come from?

The podcast genre Definitions: 1. Noun 2. Verb a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or portable media player, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically. 2. Verb make (a digital audio file) available as a podcast. Origin: blend of “broadcast” and “ipod.” Created between 2000-2005.

Group activity- podcast analysis In your new unit 3 groups Listen to the sample podcast walking tour and answer the following questions How would you break down and describe the types of content in the walking tour. Example: history, introductions, transitions, engaging information, etc. How does the podcast transition between different places within the location? What sounds are included in the podcast aside from Rick Steve’s voice? How does the podcast guide listeners through the area despite not having a visual component?
