Mind’s On – Group Discuss You will see a number of images that you have likely seen dozens if not hundreds of times over your life. As we scroll through just think about them without blurting out preferences or personal opinions

Critical Discussion Whether you like the above films or not is not the focus, what you want to discuss with your partner/group is: These posters are linked based on… These sources might be important (or at least known)to your future children because… The Schools of Thought that can be used in discussing these films are… If one doesn’t like these films they are still part of the consumer ‘process’ because…

What is the difference between the films just talked about and the following images?

Pre-Note Discussion What is the difference between these terms? Popular Fad Trend

Sometimes referred to as the ‘bandwagon effect’ but that is too simplistic Is something that is important to a society/culture, and can even explain it (Sym. Int) Can rise and fall quickly, but is modified or replaced

Characteristics of a Cultural Phenomenon #1 – It is Observable This means that the occurrence is something that we see in everyday life We do not have to like it for it to be culturally observable

#2 – It is something we can Participate in We can actively take part or watch from afar We are participating if we actively dislike something This can occur in our free time, as a hobby, as academic study, through our purchases, etc.

#3 – The occurrence is something that explains our Collective Understanding It refers to the meaning and practices of everyday life and is reflection of societal norms Can be explained through the Social Sciences, Law, Economics, History, etc.

Smartphone Article Write the title of the article in your notes. Make a 3-column chart. What evidence from the article suggests that smartphones have all 3 elements of a cultural phenomenon? (use your chart) How are smartphones going beyond reflecting culture and are truly changing culture? Use specific evidence from the article to support your own ideas. Is there any evidence or reason to think that it isn’t (it’s just a phone, right?)

Collective Understanding Observable Participate Collective Understanding

Other Terms to Know Normalization: When a phenomenon is so accepted that it becomes part of the mainstream Desensitize: Becoming familiar to a particular stimuli, thus reducing reaction to it

Quote Compare Machines are “helping us to be more human… we’re just increasing our humanness and ability to connect with each other, regardless of geography.” (Amber Case, 2010) Who agrees/disagrees? “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” (Albert Einstein) Thoughts?

Amber Case – Ted Talk

Wrap Up – Questions to Consider Do we have certain expectations from the media? What are they? Is violence in the media a cultural phenomenon? What cultural phenomenon do you believe we have witnessed lately?
