Chapter 30 Plant Diversity ii The Evolution of Seed Plants

Nonvascular Seedless Vascular Seeded Vascular

Gymnosperms “Naked Seeds” – When you go to the gym, some people have minimum clothing on… Cycadophyta Known as ‘cycads’ Ginkgophyta Only one species exists: Ginkgo biloba Since there is only one species left, I remember this with the question “Where did its kin go?” (I know it’s a stretch but ‘kin go’ sounds like ‘ginkgo’ and the question implies that the species is alone….aww) Gnetophyta Used for medicinal purposes like ephedra – that’s so ‘neat’! (‘Gneto’ sounds like ‘neat’) Coniferophyta Conifers…duh

Practice the Pine Life Cycle

*Megaspore -> Mitosis -> Female Gametophyte (takes about 15 months to mature) -> Mitosis -> Egg °Pollen grain -> Mitosis -> Male Gametophyte (grows pollen tube, reaches female gametophyte in about 15 months) -> Discharges sperm nucleus to fertilize egg * * * ° ° ° ° I tried to remove/cover-up the labels that you didn’t need to know so that you could focus on the important ones!
