Geographic Landforms

A group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean Archipelago A group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean

Atoll A ring of coral that forms an island in an ocean or sea

Bay A body of water that extends into the land

Continent One of the seven great land masses on Earth

Delta A low, watery land formed at the mouth of a river

Desert A region of little to no rainfall (less than 10 inch per year)

Fjord A long, narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or slopes

Glacier A large mass of ice that moves very slowly on land

Gulf                                                                                            A large body of water that is partly surrounded by land; larger than a bay

Island A piece of land surrounded by water

Isthmus A narrow strip of land connected to larger land masses

Lake An inland body of water

Mountain A high area of land with steep sides and a distinct peak

Ocean Large body of saltwater that surrounds a continent; covers more than 2/3 of the earth’s surface

Peninsula An area of land surrounded by water on three sides

Plain A large, low area of flat land with few trees

Plateau A large, flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land

River A long body of water that flows over land

Sea A body of salt water that is partly enclosed by land

Strait A narrow body of water that connects to larger bodies of water

Tributary (add at the end) A stream or river which flows into a larger stream or river

Valley A low place between mountains or hills

Volcano A hole in the Earth’s crust that erupts and spews out lava, ashes and hot gases from deep inside the earth

Wetland Land area that is saturated with water such that it takes on the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem.

Deciduous A tree with broad leaves that tend to fall

Coniferous Trees with needle-like leaves
