New Political Parties, New Solutions The Great Depression New Political Parties, New Solutions

New Solutions The Great Depression was so hard it shook the political foundations of Canada (and the world) The traditional powers in Canada (Liberals, Conservatives) had very little to offer Canadians due to the principle of “Laissez-Faire” Tariffs, Relief payments, “Moving of Dirt” and Relief Camps were not solving the Depression

New Solutions 1919 Winnipeg General Strike 1929 Mackenzie King states in a speech he “wouldn’t give a penny” to the Provinces to help support people 1931 Coal Miners Strike N.B. 1932 Estevan Miner’s Strike 1932 Creation of Relief Camps 1935 Bennett campaign speech- 1935- On-to-Ottawa Trek and Regina Riot Obviously Laissez-Faire wasn’t working- were Canadians ready to try something different?

The Communist Party of Canada

The Communist Party of Canada Advocated for Canadians to receive social assistance Encourages Relief Camp workers to organize/unionize Encouraged all workers to fight for better working conditions PM Bennett made the party illegal in 1930
