Chapter 7 Intro to the Cell Section 7:1

I. Discovery A. Cells were found when the microscope was developed. 1. Anton Van Leevwenhoek – reconstructed the first microscope which was the link to all cell discoveries. Also the first to observe living micro-organisms. 2. Robert Hooke- first to see and identify a cell, cork, plant, dead.

5. Matthias Schleidan – all plants are composed of cells. 3. Rudolf Virchow – cells come from pre-existing cells. 4. Robert Brown – first to identify the nucleus. 5. Matthias Schleidan – all plants are composed of cells. 6. Theodor Schwann – all animals are composed of cells.

II. Cell Theory A. 3 parts 1. All living things are composed of one or more cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in an organism. 3. Cells come only from the reproduction of existing cells. III. Cell Diversity and organization A. Cells are not all alike. The division of labor among cell types is called cell organization.
