“The Letter” How does the title of the chapter continue the pattern of linking Marjane’s childhood with the revolution? What is Satrapi’s main purpose in this chapter? What type of transition does Satrapi use between panels? What type of relationship exists between the text and picture? How does both the transition and relationship help support Satrapi’s purpose?

“The Party” How does the title of the chapter continue the pattern of linking Marjane’s childhood with the revolution? What is Satrapi’s main purpose in this chapter? How does the Shah’s portrayal support this purpose? What type of relationship exists between the text and picture? How does this support Satrapi’s purpose?

“The Party” The man pictured below (Shapour Bakhtiar) was the prime minister of Iran from 1978 to 1980. How does this conflict with Persepolis? Why do you believe there is a discrepancy? The above panel also includes misinformation. Jimmy Carter did accept the Shah into American in order for the deposed leader to receive cancer treatment. Why do you believe Satrapi decided to include this misinformation?

The Iran-Iraq War 1980 - Feeling threatened by the revolution in Iran, and wanting control of an oil rich province, Iraq invades. The war lasts 8 years, with the U.S. giving support to Iraq, which was under the leadership of Saddam Hussein. Iraq uses chemical weapons against Iran, which resorts to human wave attacks.

The War of the Cities 1985 – Unable to make headway against Iran’s infantry, Iraq bombs major cities in Iran over and over. Civilian casualties are extremely high, as the Scud missiles struck civilian residences, schools, mosques, and commercial aircraft. In 1988 the war finally ends and leaves borders as they had been before the war.
