Controlling Fluid Flow How does fluid mechanics help people control fluids?

Fluid Mechanics Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids and how they behave. Scientists use fluid mechanics in many ways, including: Designing aircraft Wind tunnel design Improving food products Building dams Controlling blood flow

Aeronautics and Fluid Mechanics Aeronautics is the science of air and space flight. People who study aeronautics design all kinds of aircraft, such as parachutes, airplanes and space shuttles. Aerodynamics engineers use programs designed to simulate high velocity airflow around vehicles like the space shuttle.

Food Products and Fluid Mechanics Fluid mechanics is important in the food industry, too. Many fluids and gases are used to make different types of foods. Controlling how fluids flow is important for the processing of many foods. Margarine is made by combining hydrogen gas with liquid oil. If the hydrogen mixes with the oil too quickly, it creates a substance called “trans fat.” Eating too much trans fat can cause heart disease. A dripless cooking oil bottle

Dams and Fluid Mechanics People around the world control the flow of water by building dams. Dams can be used to store water and generate electricity. People have different beliefs about how dams affect the environment. Dams can produce electricity without creating dangerous wastes and polluting the air. However, dams can still alter/ destroy habitats.
