God’s Method of Reconciliation
Presentation transcript:

Romans 5:1-11 5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Thank God For Jesus: The Christians Life Under Love, Peace, and Grace. Romans 5:1-11

The Chiastic Structure Point A Point B Point C The Main Idea Point C 2 Point B 2 Point A 2

Rom 5:1-11 Chiastic Structure: 1a) Rom 5:1, We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 1b) Rom 5:2-4, Out future hope is the glory of God; 1c) Rom 5:5, The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit; “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly;” 2c) Rom 5:8, The love of God has been demonstrated by Christ dying for us while we were still sinners; 2b) Our future is not wrath; 2a) Rom 5:11, We are reconciled to God

The Main Idea “For while we were still weak, at just the right time, Christ died for godless people. Moo, D. J. (1996). The Epistle to the Romans

Christ Died At the right time? When the prophecies could be fulfilled…At the appointed time When death had become an art When the truth could be carried to the world There is a lot of conversation about what makes Christ’s death “At the right time” The main idea here is that Jesus Chose when he would be killed and for what reason Christ put himself on the cross Christ chose from the creation of the world when, where, how, and how come h

Christ Died 2. While we were still weak “that is, powerless to deliver ourselves, and so ready to perish.” Jamieson, R., Fausset, A. R., & Brown, D. (1997). Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Genesis 2:16–17 (ESV) 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” We owe an eternal death debt that we do not have the ability to pay. That the death of Jesus Christ payed when he willingly placed himself on the tree of liberty

Christ Died 3. For Godless People “whose character, so far from meriting any interposition in their behalf, was altogether repulsive to the eye of God” Jamieson, R., Fausset, A. R., & Brown, D. (1997). Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Godless People Atheists & Church people Untouchables & wealthy LGBTQ & Biblical Marriage Republicans & Democrats Country folk & City Slickers Car guys & Cyclists Prostitutes & Purity rings Winners (31) & Losers (23) WE are all Godless with no reason to boast outside of Christ

The Cross Creates Some Exciting Truths For the One Who Trusts In Christ

The Cross leaves us under the banner of God’s love

1. The Cross provides proof of God’s Love 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2. The Cross Provides the good gift of the Holy Spirit as further proof of God’s Love 5 God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us The confidence we have for the day of judgment is not based only on our intellectual recognition of the fact of God’s love, or even only on the demonstration of God’s love on the cross (although that is important; cf. vv. 6–8), but also on the inner, subjective certainty that God does love us. This is the point Paul is making by affirming that God’s love has been “poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Moo, D. J. (1996). (p. 304). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. We can have confidence in life We know that God loves us through our relationship with the Spirit We are guided by a loving God through the Spiri

The cross leaves us in a position of peace with God

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation

The cross leaves us in a position of peace with God Written during the Pax Romana Paul mentions peace here in contrast to the popular idea of peace, driving home the idea that true peace comes from the reconciliation bought for us by Christ.

What are we currently at war with? The Earth Each other Ourselves God Genesis 3

How did Christ make peace from this position of War?

Reconciliation = Restoration of friendly relationships and of peace where before there had been hostility and alienation. Ordinarily it also includes the removal of the offense which caused the disruption of peace and harmony. Elwell, W. A., & Beitzel, B. J. (1988). Baker encyclopedia of the Bible When Christ does the work of reconciliation, he makes way for peace between us and all that we destroyed Peace does not come from social justice… it comes from a return to what we were created for We are the ones who caused the alienation but when Christ died and we accepted his sacrifice, Christ removed all reason for animosity and left us in a position of family with him. This new position can be defined as Grace

The Cross puts us in a position of receiving God’s Grace

2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God… 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Living under Grace= The assurance of safety from God’s Wrath A shared future in God’s Glory. A present access into the presence of God

How does all of this affect you now? Call out to Jesus because of what he has done for you. Rejoice in your position with Christ Rejoice in the Goodness of God

How does all of this affect you now? Stand strong in knowledge of you position with Christ Stand strong due to your future hope in Christ Give Thanks In short spend more time smiling because God is so good
