G-pedia Childhood and Education John Locke was born in Warington, England on August 29, 1632. His parents were Agnes Keene and John Locke. His mother died when he was an infant leaving his father to raise him and his brother, Thomas. John had a fragile health condition and the civil war was in outbreak. These circumstances had him home schooled during 1642, at the age of 10. He enrolled at Westminster School at 14. He stayed there for six years then attended Christ Church, Oxford. At his college he was elected senior student at age 32. To complete his major he needed to get ordained a minister. Locke did not want that so he changed his major to medicine. After receiving his license to practice, he decided to learn about the study of natural science. Robert Boyle, a member of the Royal Society took Locke under his wing to teach him about natural science. In 1668 Locke became a member of the Royal Society. That was the last of his education (notablebiographies.com). G-pedia

G-pedia Marriage and Family John Locke’s immediate family was his mother Agnes Keene, father John Locke, and brother Thomas Locke. Agnes Keene died while Locke was a baby, leaving his father to raise the two boys alone. John Locke was a attorney, and dedicated father (notablebiographies.com). Locke was the older than Thomas, who was born from another marriage. John Locke was never married. This could be because he traveled and moved places a lot. John greatly respected his father for the hard work that he did during the boys young life. John Locke may not have been married but he lived a happy and notable life (facutly.frostburg.edu). G-pedia Career/Beliefs John Locke’s first job was in 1658. He taught Greek and moral philosophy at Christ Church, Oxford. Locke’s next job was in 1665, in diplomatic service . He would travel as a secretary to an embassy. Along one of these voyages he traveled to London and met he meet Lord Ashley. The two became close friends, and in 1667 Ashley hired Locke as a physician and medical advisor. He stayed there for ten years then moved back to Oxford, then France, and back to England. In 1691 Locke spent most of his time with his friends at an estate. He was the Commissioner of the Board of Trade until 1696. At this point he was just consulting with leaders of the government until his death in 1704 (discoverjohnlocke.com). Locke believed in reason, and that everybody has natural rights. He believed in life, liberty, and property. Locke was convinced that people could improve themselves by self experience. He also believed in self government, or a democracy. John Locke thought everyone was born free and equal, so he stressed their rights (R. Gesualdo). G-pedia

Legacy John Locke was an enlightenment thinker in the 17th century. His ideas and beliefs were a big contribution to the United States government. His ideas about natural rights were the basis for the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence. He believed all people were born free and equal with the rights to life, liberty and property. Locke also believed that all people could learn and improve themselves from previous self experiences. This led to self-government, which started a modern democracy. John Locke is a very important philosopher in history. His ideas gave the United States government a basis for two important documents. Locke also gave the citizens in the United States the freedom and rights they have today ( R. Gesualdo). G-pedia
