Timeline of Emotions Purpose: to use a generating strategy to create a list of ideas for future writing *Instruct students to go to the next available blank page in the comp. book and write out the date on the upper left-hand side. *Turn the comp. book sideways and write “Timeline of Emotions” along the left hand column. *Invite students to the meeting area for the mini-lesson. **Begin mini-lesson with a connection: “So writers, at our last meeting, we talked about how good writers collect ideas and put them into a bank from which to draw. The more ideas, the better. So today I’m going to show you another generating strategy called ‘Timeline of Emotions’.” Show the mood cards from the desk and pick an emotion. (See Sample #3.) **Draw a timeline and chart all of times that emotion was felt. **Show students the PowerPoint slide that lists many emotions. Instruct them pick an emotion and to go back to their seats and timeline it out. *If students get stuck, instruct them to choose another emotion and timeline it out. They can also pick an emotion that might not be listed on the PowerPoint slide. *After 10 minutes of generating, instruct students to pick one moment and write an entry about it. The entry should be 15 minutes long.
