Exercises Observer Viewer installation Hands on
Exercises – Hands on Exercise 1 You have been asked to prepare a summary table showing the estimated bycatch weight taken from your LONGLINE or PURSE SEINE fishery. To produce this table, you will use your countries available OBSERVER DATA and the ANNUAL CATCH ESTIMATES for tuna. (Choose any year where Observer data and annual catch estimates are available).
Exercises – Hands on Exercise 1 – Solution Open your Annual Catch Estimates Sum total tuna catch estimate for the past 3 years Ex: 2007 = 2+3 = 6 mt 2008 = 91+375+15 = 481 mt 2009 = 120+381+10 = 511 mt In Observer Viewer, run report: Global->LL/PS-> CATCH composition Enter the above estimates in the red cells (for last 3 years) You now have the estimated bycatch weight available… …with graphics that you can potentially insert in your final report
Exercises – Hands on Exercise 2 You have been asked by your observer coordinator to prepare a summary of observer activities for a selected year (you can select any year and any gear). The summary will be a MS WORD document and will need to contain the following tables and graphs, correctly labeled: A table showing the list of observer trips conducted in that year (General -> Observer Trip Reporting) A map showing the distribution of effort for the gear as reported by observers for that year (LL or PS -> Effort map) A table showing the Catch by species as reported by observers for that year (LL or PS -> Detailed Catch Statistics) A table showing the SPECIES OF SPECIES INTEREST encountered by observers for that year (and any other year); Tables showing Marine Reptile encounters can also be shown. (LL or PS -> Species of Special Interest) A graph showing the quarterly length frequency of target tuna recorded by observers for that year. (LL or PS -> SIZE Composition)
