Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Abstract This document proposes to reduce the overhead of Probe Response transmission by including the MinChannelTime into the Probe Request. Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company

Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C Conformance Question Response Does the proposal degrade the security offered by Robust Security Network Association (RSNA) already defined in 802.11? No Does the proposal change the MAC SAP interface? Does the proposal require or introduce a change to the 802.1 architecture? Does the proposal introduce a change in the channel access mechanism? Does the proposal introduce a change in the PHY? Which of the following link set-up phases is addressed by the proposal? (1) AP Discovery (2) Network Discovery (3) Link (re-)establishment / exchange of security related messages (4) Higher layer aspects, e.g. IP address assignment 1 Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. Background (1/2) May 2012 Probe Response Omission Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Background (1/2) Probe Response Omission In case of active scanning, if PHY-CCA.indication (busy) primitive has not been detected before the ProbeTimer reaches MinChannelTime, STA scans the next channel, else when ProbeTimer reaches MaxChannelTime, process all received probe responses. Also, if STA monitors the channel when ProbeTimer reaches MaxChannelTime, AP should set the above predefined time interval to MaxChannelTime. MinChannelTime is a primitive of MLME-SCAN.request, so its value is only known to the STA locally. Thus, if STA does not receive anything within the STA dependent time window (i.e., MinChannelTime), STA may switch to other channel without receiving any Probe Response or Beacon sent within AP dependent time window, and it fails to discover that AP. IEEE802.11-12/0151r7 describes “An FILS (Fast Initial Link Setup) Capable AP may omit transmission of Probe Response frame to FILS capable STA(Station)s if the TBTT occurs within a predefined time interval.” It is necessary to specify the predefined time interval (i.e., MinChannelTime) Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company

Background (2/2) May 2012 Probe Response Broadcasting Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Background (2/2) Probe Response Broadcasting Although AP sends the single broadcast Probe Response, it does not guarantee that All STAs can receive the Probe Response from AP because the STA dependent time window for Probe Response monitoring (i.e., MinChannelTime, MaxChannelitme) is different from each other and AP can not know STA dependent time window. That is, AP should know the STA dependent time window for Probe Response monitoring to send broadcast addressed Probe Response. IEEE802.11-12/0151r7 describes “An FILS (Fast Initial Link Setup) Capable AP may omit transmission of Probe Response frame to FILS capable STA(Station)s if the TBTT occurs within a predefined time interval.” IEEE802.11-12/0151r7 describes “STA may include a wait-time-for-Probe-Response element to Probe Request to provide a max listening duration for which the STA indicates it will wait for Probe Response transmission.” It is necessary to specify the predefined time interval (i.e., MinChannelTime) and a wait-time-for-Probe-Response. Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company

Proposal (1/3) May 2012 Proposal Example (Probe Response omission) Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Proposal (1/3) Proposal Predefined time interval which described in SFD (6.1.6) is set to MinChannelTime and may be preconfigured to both STA and AP. A-wait-time-for-Probe-Response which described in SFD (6.1.7) is set to MaxChannelTime. Example (Probe Response omission) After receiving the Probe Request, AP checks whether TBTT(i.e., Target Beacon Transmission Time) occurs within the preconfigured MinChannelTime. If TBTT occurs within the MinchannelTime, AP can omit Probe Response transmission and sends Beacon on TBTT occurrence. Otherwise, AP sends Probe Response in response to Probe Request. If AP receives any MAC frame (e.g., Probe Response) within STA’s MinChannelTime, it checks whether TBTT occurs within the STA’s MaxChannelTime. In this case, AP can omit Probe Response transmission when TBTT occurs within STA’s MaxChannelTime. Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company

Proposal (2/3) May 2012 Example (Probe Response Broadcasting) Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Proposal (2/3) Example (Probe Response Broadcasting) After receiving the multiple Probe Requests, AP checks a-wait-time-Probe-Response (i.e., MaxChannelTime) of STAs. An AP refers to preconfigured MinChannelTime and MaxChannelTime of STAs and responds to multiple Probe Requests from one or more STAs with a single broadcast addressed response frame at overlapping time period of MinChannelTime of each STA or MaxChannelTime of STA. Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company

Example (1/2) May 2012 Example of Probe Response Omission Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Example (1/2) Example of Probe Response Omission If TBTT occurs within the preconfigured MinchannelTime, AP can omit Probe Response transmission and sends Beacon on TBTT occurrence. Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2012 Conclusion Knowing the STA dependent time window (i.e., MinChannelTime and MaxChannelTime) allows AP to omit or broadcast the Probe Response. Predefined time interval which described in SFD (6.1.6) is set to MinChannelTime and may be preconfigured to both STA and AP. A-wait-time-for-Probe-Response which described in SFD (6.1.7) is set to MaxChannelTime. Giwon Park, LG Electronics Inc. John Doe, Some Company
