Definition Carnival is known as the day before Ash Wednesday (in February or March). Carnival is known as the day before Ash Wednesday (in February or March). It is called Fasching or Fastnacht. On these days many people dress up and celebrate in the streets or they go to a carnival party and every foolish behviour is allowed.

Dressed up people are called Carnival fools. They greet each other with Helau or Alaaf

Carnival is very popular, but most poular in the Rhineland, especially in towns like Cologne or Duesseldorf.

Significance In almost every large city there are In almost every large city there are carnival clubs. They organize carnival processions with beautifully decorated floats. Fools are on them and throw sweets to the people in the streets. Dancers perform their show. You can watch it at home on TV.

Origin The tradition to wear fancy dresses The tradition to wear fancy dresses and masks is very old. Perhaps peole did this to banish evil ghosts or the winter. Today it is tradition to crticize politicians or the government.

Preparation To take part in a carnival event you can buy or create your own costumes.
