Applying for a Tri-Council Master’s Award Information Session for Students

CGS Master’s Award Program Three agencies offer Canada Graduate Scholarships for students to pursue a Master’s degree after they complete their undergraduate degree: SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) CIHR (Canadian Institutes for Health Research).

CGS Master’s Award Program $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable Award may start in May or Sept 2019 or Jan 2020 (May start is required if you are already enrolled in your program) Application Deadline Final Deadline: December 3 @ 9 pm local (December 1 is usual, but is a Saturday this year) Recommended Deadline: December 1 @ 9 pm local (to avoid potential problems with last minute submission)

CGS Master’s Award Program The same application form is used for applying for a scholarship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR. However, applicants must specify which Council they are applying to and only ONE can be chosen. Consult the subject matter eligibility information on each Tri-Council agency website to make sure you are applying to the correct agency. This information is especially important if your research is related to health or is in Psychology.

CGS Master’s Awards Program You MUST hold your award at the university which offers you the award You can indicate up to 3 universities on your application (which you intend to apply/attend). All of these universities will review your application and, on April 1st, notify you of the results (i.e., awarded, waiting list, declined). Application quotas are provided to each university: UNB’s quota for 2019-2020 Master’s awards is 11 for SSHRC, 8 for NSERC, and 1 for CIHR.

CGS Master’s Awards Program Why you should include UNB among your list of three institutions if your program of interest is offered here: UNB provides CGS Master’s Award holders with another $10,000 on top of the $17,500 award ($7000 NBIF award + $3000 SGS BoG award).

Eligibility to Apply You must be Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada You must have completed, as of December 31 2018, between 0 and 12 months of full-time graduate studies (or full-time equivalent) You must not have previously held a CGS M You must have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent) (3.7/4.3 GPA)

Eligibility to Hold an Award When the award starts, you must be registered full-time in a Master’s program or in the first PhD year of a combined MA/PhD program in Canada The degree program must include (a) significant research training, as indicated by completion of a thesis, major paper, project, publication, performance or exhibit; and (b) methods/statistics coursework or experience to conduct and interpret research in the field.

Application Form (through Research Portal) CGS M: HOW TO APPLY Application Form (through Research Portal) https://portal-portail.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/s/login.aspx Other Parts of the Application: (a) Research Proposal (1 page + 1 page citations) (b) Canadian Common CV https://ccv-cvc.ca/indexresearcher-eng.frm (c) Official Transcripts (students must scan and upload one PDF file (< 10 MB)) (d) Two References (enter referee information on application; letters are submitted electronically) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS – Your life will be less stressful! 15/01/2019 School of Graduate Studies

CGS-M: Selection Process and Criteria Applications are made available to the institutions listed; each institution distributes applications to the relevant departments/faculties. Departments/faculties evaluate the files (academic excellence 50%; research ability and potential 30%; communication and leadership skills 20%), rank order the applicants, and submit this ranking to the School of Graduate Studies.

CGS-M: Selection Process and Criteria A university committee reviews the applications and the department/faculty ranking and generates a university ranking. This ranking determines the order in which applicants will receive a funding offer. Institutions make offers to their top-ranked students on April 1. Students have up to 21 days to accept or decline.

Tips for Writing A Good Application A good application demonstrates a strong academic record; excellent potential to conduct scholarly research; and strong communication and leadership skills. Read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly (e.g., respect page limits). Adhere to format guidelines and use plain language Get feedback from a supervisor and/or others on the research proposal; state clearly how your proposed work builds on previous work and why is it important. Start your application when you leave today!
