Cells

Bellringer 10/7 If you haven’t already, please finish the prokaryote/eukaryote scenario sheet from Monday. We will be starting off checking these. You may use your book notes from Monday to help you. If you turned yours in to the sub, you will get those back in a moment.

Cell Theory 1. Every living organism is made of one or more cells 2. Cells arise from pre-existing cells 3. Cells are the basic unit of life

Cells can be divided into different categories. Prokaryotes Examples- Bacteria 2. Eukaryotes Examples- Plants and Animals

Prokaryote or Eukaryote? Read each scenario and decide what type of cell is being described. Make sure to justify your answers.

Cell Organelles Nucleus- control center for the cell, contains DNA. Nuclear Envelop- surrounds nucleus, contains pores for RNA to leave the nucleus Contains DNA- stringy form is called chromatin, coiled form is called chromosomes Nucleolus- makes RNA

5. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum- helps make proteins, rough surface due to attached ribosomes **Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum- helps make lipids, smooth surface without ribosomes 6. Ribosomes- make proteins

7. Plasma Cell Membrane- surrounds the cell and allows certain materials to move in and out of the cell, made up of phospholipids 8. Cytoplasm- jelly-like material called cytosol that holds the cell organelles

9. Mitochondria- Make energy called ATP 10 9. Mitochondria- Make energy called ATP 10. Golgi Bodies (or Golgi Apparatus)- Packages and transports materials throughout cell 11. Lysosome- digests cell wastes 12. Centriole- involved in cell division (mitosis) in animal cells

Other Animal Cell Structures: Cilia- These help with cell movement. Cells usually have a lot and they are small in length. Flagella- These are also for movement. Usually few on a cell and they are very long in length.

Plant Cell Structures Vacuole- Storage of cell materials. Several small vacuoles in animal cells, one big vacuole in plant cells. Chloroplast- site of photosynthesis in plant cells Cell Wall- made of cellulose, protective barrier in plant cells

A CELL IS THE SUM OF ITS PARTS A CELL IS THE SUM OF ITS PARTS! It is the basic unit of life only when all the parts work together to make “LIFE” possible.

Exit Slip/Test Corrections Your exit slip is the organelle matching sheet from Monday. If you are done, great. If you haven’t done it, you need to. Test corrections: If you scored less than a “B” on your biochemistry unit test, you may do test corrections for partial credit back to reach a maximum score of 83%. Test corrections need to be done in this classroom. You may use your study guide, notes, book, etc, but not another classmate. On the test correction sheet, mark the number for any question you missed, your original answer, your new answer, and support for why you chose your new answer. If you scored a “B” or higher, you do not need to do test corrections.

Cell Analogies Complete the Cell Analogy sheet, first reading through the example and then creating your own.
