Chap 7 Introduction I promise that I will be forever by your side. What is the real meaning here? It is not about factual statements but has a social context. I will love you and be faithful to you.

Chap 7 Ordinary language philosophy It focused on the idea that language was a useful part of exploring philosophical ideas. That ordinary language has a role in that exploration Academic language can obscure meaning rather than being more precise.

Chap 7 Utterances A statement asserts a fact – either true or false. Utterances DO something. I promise.....

Chap 7 Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics and semiotics that studies the ways in which context contributes to meaning.

Chap 7 Speech act theory To understand language one must understand the speaker’s intention. Since language is intentional behavior, it should be treated like a form of action.

Chap 7 Maxims Rules for maximizing understanding in conversation Irony – an example of intentional violations of those maxims. But to understand irony, you must understand the context.

Chap 7 Politeness Often what is – or is not - said is a matter of avoiding embarrassment or conflict More than just etiquette , but an essential foundation of society.

Chap 7 Hey! Over here. It's me.

Chap 7 Deixis is a word and phrase, such as “me” or “here”, that cannot be fully understood without additional contextual information. -- in this case, Hey! [you] Over here. [in front of the class] It's me. [The Teacher] or [Richard]

Chap 7 The study of ordinary language has lead to shaping research of language If we determine ordinary language has meaning and is relevant then We can analyze it and determine meaning of it.
