Unit Preview:
Engage: Make a detailed drawing of what you think the inside of the earth looks like.
Unit: Earth History Topic: Earth Layers Page:#5 I CAN… Identify the layers of the earth and explain the different characteristics.
Explain: Notes Earth is broken into four main layers: 1. Earth Layers (Density Layers) Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core 2. As you go deeper: The pressure increases Temperature increases Density increases
Density? How tightly packed the molecules in the substance are. A B
Scientists can not travel past the crust- so how do you think they know this?!
As of today, there are no machines that can carry humans into the center of the earth. If you were to dig a tunnel deep into the earth you would notice that the temperature would increase greatly and the pressure would squish/break any machine that you tried to send down there.
Explain: Notes 3. Evidence: Rock Samples- volcanoes expose rocks from deep below the surface Seismic Waves- waves of energy Due to earthquakes
Explain: History of Evidence Evidence:Earth's structure
Two Truths and A Lie: The Crust a. The crust is as thin as 10 km and as thick as 30 km. b. The crust is liquid c. The crust is the very top layer of the earth’s layers
Two Truths and A Lie: The Crust a. The crust is as thin as 5 km and as thick as 70 km. b. The crust is liquid c. The crust is the very top layer of the earth’s layers
Two Truths and A Lie: The Mantle The mantle is 2,886 km thick – the distance from Colorado to New York. The mantle is extremely hot but solid The mantle is made up of mostly granite and basalt
Two Truths and A Lie: The Mantle The mantle is 2,886 km thick – the distance from Colorado to New York. The mantle is extremely hot but solid The mantle is made up of mostly granite and basalt
Two Truths and A Lie: The Outer Core The outer core is 1,222 km thick – Colorado to Alabama. The outer core is liquid molten metal. The outer core has more pressure then the crust and mantle
Two Truths and A Lie: The Outer Core The outer core is solid iron The outer core is liquid molten metal. The outer core has more pressure then the crust and mantle
Two Truths and A Lie: The Inner Core The inner core is 1,222 km thick The inner core is made of nickel and iron The inner core is not as hot as the mantle
Two Truths and A Lie: The Inner Core The inner core is 1,222 km thick The inner core is made of nickel and iron The inner core is not as hot as the mantle
Summary: Explain Explain how an egg is a good representation of the layers of the earth.
