Explore it! Directions: Working with a partner or group, discuss the following questions: What would the lamp represent and what type of heat transfer is this? What do you think the plastic wrap would represent? If this represented a true model of the Earth, what percentage would be land (the small cup filled with rocks) and what percentage would be water? Then explain how you know that each process below is or has occurred in “Water Cycle in a Beaker.” You should only observe the beaker, NOT TOUCH! Try to collaborate and talk with a partner or group about each process

Read it! Directions: Read “Walter the Water Molecule” (pg. #5 of PDF File) story in the ISN folder of your Class Notebook. Next to each paragraph, write the process(es) that is or are occurring. Answer Key D Water to ice is freezing (through cooling). Ice to water is melting (through heating). Water to gas is evaporating (through heating). A Dew is created through condensation. On humid days, there is a lot of water vapor in the air. At night when the temperature cools, the water vapor turns to water droplets (dew) on the grass through condensation. 18 degrees is more than freezing so it would not be frost. C The water is seeping below the ground (Zone A), which is infiltration. Ground must be permeable for water to seep through. Condensation occurs when the water vapor (gas) molecules begin to cool. This causes the molecule to move slower and together, turning into a liquid. Melting and Evaporation involves heating. The sun’s radiation causes the water to evaporate, which is essential for the water cycle. Without evaporation, there would be no water vapor in the atmosphere and therefore no clouds or precipitation. Evaporation and transpiration change water to water vapor through heating. This allows the water to enter the atmosphere, or the air.
