Hello, my name is Cheri Gladney, I am a new elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona who has come before you District Principals and Administrators to share and bring awareness to you all as it pertains to youth at-risk in our community.

Youth At-Risk (8) Eight Indicators Poverty and economic deprivation School failure Family history of drug/alcohol use or abuse Attention deficits Hyperactivity Poor bonding between parent/parents & child Rejection by conforming peer groups Low neighborhood attachment (8) Eight Indicators

Effects & Implications associated with being at-risk youth… Violence Obesity or unhealthy dieting Disrespectful Bullying Social awkwardness Sexual behavior Self –Injury Suicide

The potential of short- and long-term implications of these behaviors on a student’s ability to achieve academic success are…

They will fall behind in school. They will feel awkwardly social. They feel uneasy in their environment. They will not work to their fullest potential.

The school’s role in establishing youth development philosophies Utilize best practice strategies in youth development programming. Create a safe school environment. Deter stereotyping and cultural assumptions. Engage our youth effectively. Create and implement intentional and engaging activities. Engage in experiential education and service learning. Engage older and marginalized young people. Integrate youth development into organizational practice.

Solutions… School based treatment and preventive interventions Culturally relevant violence prevention Parent training interventions especially with children that display behavior inabilities
