Calendar of You Create a quick timeline on your packet. The Year of your birth should be year 1. Anything that happened before your birth should be counted back and called BMB: (Before My birth) Anything that happened after your birth should be counted up and called AMB (After My Birth) 5 BMB Ms. Bell’s parents get married Year 1 AMB Ms. Bell is Born Year 18 AMB Ms. Bell graduates from high school

Share Is everyone’s year 1 the same in the Western calendar? No! All cultures calendars are different depending on the important events in their history Today other countries convert their calendars to Western if they do business with the West

Western Calendar Organized around one event: Birth of Jesus is our Year 1

Old System B.C.: Before Christ A.D. Anno Domini (Year of Our Lord) or to help you remember “After Death”

New System B.C.E. Before Common Era C.E. Common Era Same as B.C. Same as A.D.

Centuries Because we don’t have Zero centuries this gets a little off Century is always one above the hundred place 150 AD is in the ______ Century 200-101 100-1 201-300 1-100 101-200

Let’s Practice! If we want to discuss an event that took place during the lifetime of Jesus are we in BC(E) or AD(CE)? AD(CE) If we want to describe this century what would we call it? First Century AD(CE) What years would technically be included? 1-100 AD(CE)

Let’s Practice! 4. If we want to discuss an event that took place 5000 years ago are we in BC(E) or AD(CE)? BCE 5. What year was it 5000 years ago? 2986 B.C.(E.) 6. If we want to discuss an event that took place 1348 years ago are we in BC(E) or AD(CE)? AD(CE) 7. What year was it 1348 years ago? 666 AD(CE)
