adjectives An adjective is a word that helps describe or modify a noun or pronoun. They can show which one, what kind, or how many Identify the adjectives in the following example sentences: 1. The big dog barks. 2. The tiny cat ran away. 3. There were thirty students. 4. We all have green notebooks. 5. Her blue sneakers were filthy. 6. She has a great, big crush on him.

adverbs An adverb is any word that helps modify or further describe a verb, adjective, or another adverb. They show HOW something is done MOST adverbs end in L and Y Identify the adverbs in the following sentences: 1. We silently took our notes. 2. Greg quickly finished his test. 3. Jim expertly handled the situation. 4. She walked away as loudly as possible.

Adverbs (continued) Some adverbs tell WHERE an action happened. Examples: here, there, somewhere, everywhere, in, out, inside, outside, etc., etc. Identify the adverbs in the following: 1. Will came and sat here. 2. They are going to walk there. 3. Bad grades were everywhere. Some adverbs tell WHEN an action happened. Examples: today, tomorrow, regularly, often, later, early, last, etc., etc. 1. She will leave later. 2. Harry is going to class tomorrow. 3. Elizabeth got to school early.

Adverbs (continued) Some adverbs tell how often something happened. Examples: so, enough, quite, almost, very, too, only, also, etc., etc. Identify the adverbs in the following sentences: 1. The test was so hard. 2. He almost lost the race. 3. She is quite mad at you. 4. He meant to scare him only.

Articles There are only two articles: a & the “A” is an indefinite article because it goes with an indefinite or general noun. “The” is the definite article because it denotes a specific noun. Identify the articles in the following sentences: 1. The duck swims on the lake. 2. It was a great book. 3. A breeze blew through the town. 4. The dog sat on a rock.

Conjunctions A conjunction is a word which conjoins (connects) parts of a sentence. Examples: and, but, or, so, yet, for, etc., etc. Identify the conjunctions in the following sentences: 1. Batman and Gordon protect Gotham. 2. Our options were hot dogs or hamburgers. 3. The night was calm but loud. 4. He went swimming and hiking.

Prepositions A preposition is a word describing a noun/pronoun that shows location A preposition is the first word in a prepositional phrase; the last word is a noun we call the object of the preposition (OP).

Prepositions (continued) Example: Bob met Jim at the meeting. The prepositional phrase is “at the meeting” “at” is the preposition (Prep) “meeting” is the object of the preposition (OP)

Prepositions (continued) Identify the prepositional phrases in the following sentences. Then, label the preposition and the object of the preposition. 1. At the game, she cheered. 2. A troll lives under the bridge. 3. There was a cabin by the sea. 4. In the woods, we played hide-and-seek. 5. During the storm, the family went down the cellar steps and waited. 6. Despite the warnings, we still went across the street to the haunted house.
