GRAPEFRUIT A grapefruit is a large citrus fruit related to the orange, lemon, and pomelo. The pulp can be either white, pink, or red.
GRAPEFRUIT Grapefruits were discovered in Barbados in the 18th century, and given the name “grapefruit” in 1814 in Jamaica. The name reflects the way the fruit grows – hanging in clusters just like grapes!
GRAPEFRUIT Grapefruit trees were planted in Florida in the early 19th century, although they did not become a viable crop until later that century. Florida is still the major producer of grapefruits, as are California, Arizona, and Texas.
GRAPEFRUIT Grapefruits range in size from four to six inches in diameter, and have a tart and tangy taste with underlying sweetness.
