OUTLINE I. Introduction II. Motive III. History IV. Explanation of parts V. The Gatling Gun Maxim and the first fully automatic Three types of machine guns 1. Recoil system 2. Blowback system 3. Gas system

INTRODUCTION During this presentation, I will attempt to show you how a fully automatic machine gun fires ammunition so rapidly. Using pictures and animations, I will show you the mechanics that are involved in a machine guns operation.

MOTIVE Growing up, I always wondered how machine guns fired so quickly. So when this assignment was introduced, I decided it would be a good opportunity for me to study this subject that has fascinated, and confused me for a long time.

HISTORY According to many historians, the machine gun is one of the most important inventions of the past 100 years. It has redefined the art of warfare and set the brutal tone to World War I and II, as well as every war since then. This machine allows one man to fire hundreds of round every minute, allowing him to take out an entire platoon in only a few passes. Due to this invention, the military forces had to develop heavier battle equipment, such as tanks, in order to be able to resist the power of this machine.

PARTS OF A MACHINE GUN Bolt- Solid metal rod with spring attached to rear, which is thrust upon the bullet in order to fire. Trigger- Lever used to release the bolt from a locked position when pulled. Barrel- Long, hollow tube of metal that the bullet is fired into before the bullet exits the gun. Extractor- Connected to bolt and is used to eject used cartridges. Sear- Lever acted upon by the trigger which releases the bolt. Pin- Small meta piece on the end of the bolt used to strike the bullet causing it to fire.

Gatling Gun Gatling gun M1865

THE GATLING GUN INFO Invented by Richard Jordan Gatling Fired by cranking a handle Consists of 6 to 10 barrels each with its own pin Uses a hopper to drop ammunition into the barrels Gatling gun

FIRST FULLY AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUN Invented by Hiram Maxim Could shoot 500 rounds per minute Introduced to the British army in 1885 Used the explosion of the cartridge to re-cock
