The Inner Person Chapter Fifteen

Let’s think for a moment with Mahatma Gandhi.

“Learn as if you were to live forever.” For students, school is their present and their future. Let’s teach as if they were going to live forever. In fact, our first grade students are likely to outlive this century. “Where there is love there is life.” Love is the most important outcome of school. Love of life. Love of the planet. Love of its inhabitants, both flora and fauna. Love of people near and far.

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” Learning to investigate requires the willingness to change one’s mind. Learning to make a difference will surely need the acknowledgment that one’s first idea is not the best one.

The reason for education is to help the young to find themselves through service to others.
