Mentoring Program 2009 Levon Akoghlanian

OBJECTIVE Provide assistance to mentors in developing referees. Provide assistance to referees in their career development Provide assistance to assigners in developing mentoring programs in their respective town or league

Characteristics of mentor Willingness to assume and demonstrate leadership Willingness to assume responsibility and accountability as a mentor Willingness to help set goals, coach, and give feedback Willingness to share personal experiences relevant to the needs of the mentee. Knowledgeable regarding rules and procedures and ability to communicate. Aware of resources and the ability to access

Expectations of a Mentor Coach, counsel, teach, guide Attend one or more games and provide feedback Help Develop goals for referee’s to achieve Help Develop and give guidance to achieve the goals Provide feedback honestly and timely manner. Develop confidence Be a reference point for any questions on and off the field

Mentoring applications Candidate identified Participants Drafts Goals Develop actions steps to achieve the goals Target specific dates to achieve the goals Develop list of resources that require to achieve the goals Evaluate progress ongoing basis Communicate the progress

Characteristics of Mentee Willingness to assume responsibility for one’s own growth and development Goal oriented Actively seeks and is willing to tack on greater challenges Receptive to feedback and coaching Willingness to put the time and the effort to better themselves.

Expectations of the referee Actively seek challenging assignments and greater responsibility Set goals and objectives for themselves and communicate to appropriate individuals. Attend tournaments and be “active participant” Attend special clinics , maintain and update knowledge regarding rules of the game and interpretation of the rules. Maintain ultimate fitness Request at appropriate levels for assessments Attend as many games of your senior referees Be true to yourself and your expectations Be professional at all times “respect to be respected”

Conclusion Mentoring program will only work if all parties are willing to invest time and effort and recognize to be successful must work together. Additionally we must reward individuals that are participating in the mentoring program by ensuring they will receive appropriate recognition and avenue mobility to higher levels. Communication must exist at all levels in order to ensure the success of the program.
