Recap Movement towards Confederation Series of pushes to attain responsible government 1791 Constitutional Act Lower Canada Rebellions 1840 Act of Union

Movement Towards Confederation Act of Union, 1840 United Lower & Upper Canada Problems with Legislative Assembly (still powerless) Population difference (Canada East had higher population, so wanted more votes) Leads to: Alliance Lafontaine & Baldwin (both reformers during Rebellion), united to be more effective in persuading responsible government

Responsible Government 1846, Britain applied Free Trade Doctrine No more protectionist policies, colonies had to compete with global competition Colonies wanted more control over own domestic policies Result: Canada granted Responsible government

Responsible Government Francophone and Anglophone bourgeoisie used it to promote interest (economic development) Wanted to ensure colony’s prosperity Investing money: canals, railways Opened New Areas of colonization (to stop French emigration) Government ‘tried’ attempsts at ‘bettering colony’ Gave a lot of power to Church to ensure control of population (sick, poor)

Confederation Project Reason: help solve political tensions, develop economy, unite territory (from fear of American expansion) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdGoyNu6ifQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBGNEJpznNE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9VPQKhf7go
