Marching Band Methods Day 4 Competition vs. Non - Competition

Structured Debate Format Continue with Structured Debate…

Music Selection What is difference between Competitive and Non-Competitive Music Selection? What are the goals of your music? Who are you playing for? Does the music allow for a visual interpretation? Does you show make sense and have flow from beginning to end?

Resources for Music Selection Arrangers Publishing Company J.W. Pepper MSConcepts.com Creative Solutions - avbundle.com Individual Arrangers (commissioning) Call Senseney Music Band Directors with similar programs and goals

Warm-Up in Rehearsal What do we need to warm up?? What is your system? Any warm up needs structure, consistency, familiarity, but also room for variation and tweaking. How will your percussion and auxiliary units warm up? With the Band? Separate? Where?

Marching Warm-Up Fundamentals every day!! What do you want to accomplish with your fundamental system? Involve elements that are important to you: Posture and Carriage Step style Step size Marching for proper playing Uniformity PLEASE USE DIFFERENT TEMPOS!!! OTHER PURPOSE: Warm Up the BRAIN!

Marching Drills/Warm Up 8 to 5s, or 6s or halfs (with variations - Slow motion, points, horns up/down, sequences, mark times) Example Sequence ( MT 8, FM 8, MT 8, FM 12, MT 8, FM 16, Close) Box Drills (MT 4, FM 8, RS 8, BM 8, LS 8, Repeat or Close) ALWAYS HAVE A SYSTEM OF DRESSING

Music Warm Up Concert Band Approach? Breathing! - What are good exercises? Steal from the Breathing Gym(Pilafian/Sheridan). Think about ways to achieve good tone, flexibility, articulations, dynamic levels. Metronome Use? Chorales are a good idea - Purpose. Have a system for Intonation. Have it written out and practiced. Establish Good Habits. Ears and Brain are important!
