The Scientific Method
The Scientific Method The scientific method is the only scientific way accepted to back up a theory or idea. This is the method on which all research projects should be based. The Scientific Method is used by researchers to support or disprove a theory.
The Scientific Method The Scientific Method involves 5 steps: Observation Question – or Problem Hypothesis – educated guess Method – plan the experiment Result/Conclusions
The Scientific Method 1. Observation- You observe something in the material world, using your senses or machines which are basically extensions of those senses. AH—Look at this!
The Scientific Method 2. Question- You ask a question about what you observe. State the problem, or question.
The Scientific Method 3. Hypothesis- You make an educated guess, or prediction, to your question or problem.
The Scientific Method 4. Method - You figure out a way to test your hypothesis and plan the experiment The outcome must be measurable. What does that mean?
The Scientific Method 5. Results/Conclusion- You do the experiment using the method you came up with and record the results. repeat the experiment a few times to confirm your results by retesting. You state whether your hypothesis was true or not and try to explain your results. Analyze results and draw conclusions. It’s okay if your hypothesis was wrong…that’s science!!!
The Scientific Method You will be using the Scientific Method to prove your ideas and to conduct experiments this year.
